Head Start Program Assistant

Position: Program Assistant

Location: Anchorage, AK

Reports to: Head Start Division Coordinator

Work Schedule: 37.5 hours per week 

Salary:  DOE

Duties: Provide program support to the Head Start staff and Component Coordinators.  Perform administrative task such as compiling data from a wide variety of sources (e.g. student information, time sheets, calendars, filing, copying, ordering and maintaining office supplies, etc.) for the purpose of preparing reports and information for assigned Head Start coordinator.  Create meetings in Microsoft Outlook, prepare meeting agendas, take minutes, keep running task list from meetings and follow up on progress of tasks.  Manages projects as assigned. Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops, and/or trainings for the purpose of providing or receiving information, and supporting the needs of the attendees. Oversees the work activities within the office for the purpose of organizing assignments, monitoring progress, and ensuring completion within established guidelines.

Qualifications: Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.  Stable job history with at least four years of experience preferable with an Alaskan Native tribal entity.  Oral and written communication skills and ability to use those skills interpersonally.

Strong clerical skills and excellent organizational skills.  Ability to write professional correspondence and documentation.  Knowledge about federal/state grant writing procedures and ability to read and understand budgets required preferred.  Have strong Microsoft Office skills focusing on Word Processing, Outlook, Publisher, PowerPoint, Excel and data tracking programs such as ChildPlus.  Ability to efficiently handle multiple tasks simultaneously and work effectively in a fast-paced environment and meet stringent program requirements.   Demonstrate dependability, maturity, good judgment in performance of duties and the ability to be a team player.

Requirements: Upon date of hire, must provide documentation of current TB test and Hepatitis screening/vaccination status; pre-employment physical examination; criminal history background clearance and be willing to obtain a CPR and First Aid Certification.


Position is open until filled. Relocation and housing not included.

Native preference will be given, depending on experience.
